Help! I’ve Pulled My Acrylics Off and Ruined My Nails

If you have pulled your acrylics off at home and your nails now feel thin, sore or damaged, you’re definitely not the first to do it! This is one of the most common problems we see in the salon and the good news is that your natural nails can recover with the right care.

Our guide will walk you through exactly what has happened, what to do immediately, and how to restore your nails properly without causing further damage.

1. Understand what damage has actually happened

When acrylics (or builder gel) are pulled off, layers of your natural nail are torn away with the product. This is called nail plate trauma.

You may notice:

• Nails feeling bendy or painful

• White, flaky patches

• Redness or sensitivity

• Nails splitting or peeling

The good news is, this isn’t permanent. Your nail matrix is usually unaffected, which means healthy nail growth is still possible with time and correct care.

2. Stop all further trauma immediately

The most important step is to stop picking, buffing or trying to ‘tidy them up’.

Do not:

• Peel remaining product

• Buff aggressively

• Use gel, acrylic, builder gel or press-ons

Overworking already damaged nails slows recovery and increases sensitivity.

3. Gently shorten and smooth the nails

Using a fine-grit file, carefully reduce the length of your nails to avoid catching and tearing.

How to do it properly: • File in one direction only • Keep the nails short and rounded • Avoid buffing the surface

Short nails are less likely to flex and split while healing.

4. Start intensive daily cuticle oil use

A good quality cuticle oil is non-negotiable during nail recovery. It improves flexibility, hydration and supports healthy nail growth from the matrix.

How to use it:

• Apply morning and evening

• Massage into the cuticle and nail plate

• Continue daily for at least 6 to 8 weeks

5. Protect the nails with a treatment

Bare damaged nails are vulnerable. A light, gentle treatment or recovery base coat can protect the nail without adding stress.

Look for:

• A flexible treatment, not a hardener

• Something designed for weak or peeling nails

Avoid hardeners as they make fragile nails more brittle and prone to snapping.

6. Wear gloves for everyday tasks

Water and chemicals are very damaging to compromised nails.

Always wear gloves when:

• Washing up

• Cleaning

• Gardening

Prolonged water exposure softens the nail, increasing peeling and breakage.

7. Book a professional recovery appointment

A professional nail recovery treatment can dramatically improve healing time and comfort.

In the salon we can:

• Safely remove any remaining product

• Apply a structured recovery treatment

• Create a tailored regrowth plan

• Monitor nail health over time

This approach prevents repeated damage and supports long-term nail health.

8. Be patient with regrowth

Fingernails take around 12 to 16 weeks to fully regrow from the matrix to the free edge.

What healthy regrowth looks like:

• Reduced peeling over time

• Less sensitivity

• Stronger nail tips

• Smooth new growth at the cuticle

Consistency is far more important than quick fixes.

When should you seek professional advice?

If you experience ongoing pain, redness, swelling or signs of infection, seek medical advice promptly. Nail professionals do not diagnose medical conditions.
