How Can I Look After My Natural Nails?

Healthy, natural nails do not happen by accident. They are the result of consistent care, gentle habits and the right products. Whether you wear your nails bare or enjoy regular gel or BIAB appointments, these practical steps will help you keep your natural nails strong, flexible and looking their best.

1. Keep your nails clean and dry

Clean nails reduce the risk of infection and breakage. Wash your hands regularly and dry them thoroughly, especially around the nail plate and cuticle area. Avoid leaving nails wet for long periods, as water causes the nail to swell and weaken over time.

How to do it:

• Use a gentle hand wash rather than harsh soaps

• Dry hands fully, including underneath the nails

• Avoid soaking nails unless advised by a professional

2. Moisturise your cuticles every day

Cuticle oil is one of the most effective ways to improve nail health. It keeps the nail plate flexible and prevents dryness, peeling and splitting.

How to do it:

• Apply cuticle oil at least once a day, ideally before bed

• Massage it into the nail and surrounding skin to boost circulation

• Keep a small bottle in your handbag or bedside drawer for consistency

3. File little and often, in one direction

Incorrect filing is a common cause of weak nails. Always use a fine grit file and avoid sawing backwards and forwards.

How to do it:

• File in one direction only

• Keep nails at a length that suits your lifestyle

• Round or soften corners to prevent catching

If you are unsure what length or shape is best for you, your nail technician can advise at your next appointment.

4. Protect your nails during everyday tasks

Housework, gardening, and even typing can take a toll on natural nails if they are unprotected.

How to do it:

• Wear gloves for cleaning, washing up and gardening

• Avoid using your nails as tools to open packaging

• Be mindful when using phones, keyboards and taps

5. Avoid peeling or picking product

Peeling gel or BIAB removes layers of your natural nail, leaving nails thin and damaged.

How to do it:

• Book a professional removal instead of removing product at home

• If a nail chips or lifts, contact the salon for advice

• Keep nails hydrated to reduce the urge to pick

6. Give your nails recovery time when needed

If your nails feel thin or sensitive, a short break from enhancements can help restore strength.

How to do it:

• Switch to a paint on-strengthening treatment. We suggest Lavender Base by Bio Sculpture

• Maintain regular cuticle oil use

• Keep nails short and protected during recovery

Your technician can create a tailored nail plan based on your nail condition.

7. Nourish your nails from within

Nail health is closely linked to overall health and nutrition.

How to do it:

• Eat a balanced diet with protein, vitamins and minerals

• Stay hydrated

• Seek medical advice if you notice sudden or severe changes in your nails

8. Book regular professional nail care

Professional maintenance prevents damage and helps identify issues early.

How to do it:

• Stick to a regular appointment schedule

• Find a manicurist experienced in natural nail care. Not every nail technician is. Some have only ever trained in Acrylic or Builder Gel and have no experience or qualifications as a nail nail manicurist.

• Ask questions during your appointment so you can care for your nails properly at home
