Weak or brittle nails are incredibly common, especially for women over 35. Hormonal changes, repeated hand washing, gardening, cleaning products and even gel removal can all play a part.
The good news is that with the right care and a consistent routine, you can strengthen your natural nails. Below is a practical, step-by-step guide you can start today.
1. Keep Your Nails Short While They Recover
Long, weak nails are far more likely to bend and split.
What to do:
Gently trim your nails every 1 to 2 weeks.
File in one direction only using a fine grit file.
Keep the shape soft and rounded to reduce snagging.
Shorter nails reduce leverage and stress on the nail plate, giving them a chance to grow stronger.
2. Use Cuticle Oil Every Single Day
This is one of the most effective natural ways to strengthen nails.
Why it works: The nail plate is made of layers of keratin. When these layers become dry, they separate and peel. Cuticle oil helps keep the nail flexible and less prone to splitting.
How to apply:
Apply a small drop of cuticle oil to each nail.
Massage it into the nail plate, cuticle and surrounding skin.
Do this at least once a day, ideally before bed.
Consistency is key. Daily use will make a noticeable difference within a few weeks.
3. Wear Gloves for Cleaning and Gardening
Water and cleaning chemicals are two of the biggest causes of brittle nails.
What to do:
Wear rubber or lined gloves when washing up.
Use gloves when cleaning with sprays or bleach.
Wear gardening gloves when working outside.
Repeated soaking and drying cause nails to expand and contract, which weakens the structure over time.
4. Avoid Peeling Off Gel or Polish
Peeling off gel polish removes layers of your natural nail with it.
If you wear gel:
Always have it professionally removed.
Avoid picking at the lifting edges.
Give your nails short breaks between sets if they are already weak.
If you are unsure which treatment is best for your nail condition, we can assess this during your appointment.
5. Use a Strengthening Base Coat
A high-quality strengthening base coat can protect weak nails while they grow out.
How to use:
Apply one thin layer to clean, dry nails.
Reapply every few days.
Remove and refresh once a week.
This gives your nails added protection against daily wear and tear.
6. Improve Your Nutrition
Nails reflect your internal health.
To support nail strength:
Eat adequate protein, as nails are made from keratin.
Include healthy fats such as nuts and seeds.
Stay hydrated throughout the day.
If your nails are severely brittle, changing shape or becoming discoloured, it is important to speak to your GP or another healthcare professional, as nail changes can sometimes indicate underlying health issues.
7. Book Regular Natural Nail Appointments
Sometimes nails remain weak because they have been over-filed, over-buffed or treated incorrectly in the past.
At Mirelle Spa, we focus on gentle, natural nail care. We:
Avoid aggressive filing.
Use professional products suited to your nail type.
Create a personalised plan to help your nails recover.
